Challenge 2: Home Away from Home

There aren’t any locations that I consider my home-away-from-home, I rather associate that idea or feeling with my husband. That sense of comfort and safety, a place to relax and feel ‘at home’ can be acheived anywhere when I’m with him and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Sadly I just got back from my honeymoon so I didn’t have the appropriate amount of time for the initial image for this concept, but I hope you can enjoy something quick and cute <3

Challenge 2: Home Away from Home

I must confess that I had spent a good deal of time on trying to develop a concept for Caitlin’s challenge: A Home Away from Home. Despite the subject relating to my own point in life in limbo. The definition for limbo: in a state of uncertainty, neglected, up in the air, in abeyance, betwixt and in-between, not knowing whether one is coming or going. There is also sort of a sadness associated with it as it can be described as an imaginary place for lost, forgotten, or unwanted persons or things. With this feeling that I could so easily relate to, I decided to move beyond that sense of vagueness and lonesomeness, and turn the idea of a Home Away from Home to travel and exploration, adventure and determination. From my time spent in Lacoste, France, I could not help but think of all the snails and their little mobile homes. The snail carries his shell, his home, where ever he ventures, much like we have our family and friends to turn to if necessary. He’s not afraid to go it alone and continue on.

Challenge 2: Where is my “Home Away from Home?”

Hey all,
I picked this topic, thinking that it would be a piece of cake, since I love painting houses, but I quickly realized during the sketching process that this was not an easy concept to illustrate. Since moving from Savannah, I have felt a bit out of sorts as to where I am going in my life, as I’ve had to wait to start work and move into an apartment in Austin. This has been a period of limbo for me. I’m essentially living out of a suitcase, with my things packed in boxes, staying at my parents’ home. It isn’t really mine anymore, but neither is Savannah, and Austin is yet to be. I wondered, if I don’t even know where my home is, how can I know where my home AWAY from home is? Many sketches and frustrations later, I finally understood that I will have many homes away from home, regardless of where I am currently living. These places will create my community of memories, from where I went to college, to my parents’ house, childhood campsites, frequented vacation spots, and locations once used for family gatherings. Once I have my home, it will be the heart (or bundle of balloons) of that little village in my mind. Until then, I have hopeful illustration to tide me over.

Challenge 2: Home Away From Home
Now… to kick off the Square Carousel challenges (not including our obligatory animals)!
The theme for Challenge 2 is “home away from home.”
I thought it would be appropriate, since this time for many of us has consisted of a massive shift in lifestyle and location. You could interpret the phrase as sentimental, literal, humorous, or ironic. Doesn’t matter to me!
Happy illustrating!
Caitlin
